I went to my 4th T4G Conference this week in Louisville, KY. Every two years this pastor’s conference takes place and I have been to all four. The conference is very large and well-planned and this year was especially powerful from the seat I was sitting in.

By the time of arrival, I had decided I did not want to be there, had no excitement about the conference (unlike as in years past) and was looking forward to nothing…from a positive perspective. (Don’t ask why. In light of eternity it matters little – sooo little.) Then, the conference happened.

CJ Mahaney starts off with a message, “The Sustaining Power of the Gospel” from 2 Corinthians 4 which begins with, Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. Oh well, it went downhill from there. Each sermon and each song were thrown my way like I was being stoned. Boom, boom, boom – they kept coming! And right when I thought God had just about killed me with all these rocks, Ligon Duncan preaches, God’s Ruthless, Compassionate Grace in the Pursuit of His Own Glory and His Ministers’ Joy. Elijah. That guy that said, “Lord, kill me!”

And one more rock provides life. “Though He slay me, yet, I will trust Him.” It was an amazing experience where you receive the grace of God and at the same time feel the sting of His grace-filled attacks.

You can watch all the messages at T4G.org. Take special note of David Platt’s message. By far, the best missions message I’ve ever heard!

We serve a mighty God. So mighty that He can pick out one stupid preacher from a crowd of 10,000 plus and speak words to him and only him. What were all those other people thinking?

Frank

The following questions have been asked from time to time here at GotA:

Are we a Reformed Church?

Are we a “Five Points” church?

Do we believe the Doctrines of Grace?

All three of these questions are really the same question and here is our attempt to answer it:

Our first response to this question is to clarify exactly who is meant by “we”. If, by “we”, we mean Grace on the Ashley, as a church, the simple answer is, “No.” A quick look at our website reveals our statement of faith and other statements which make it very clear that Grace on the Ashley is not defined specifically as a “Reformed” church. We have members who are Arminian in their theology as well as others who are Calvinists. Where you stand on these two very different theologies is not a requirement of membership. Where you stand with Christ is.

If, by “we”, we mean the two Preaching Pastors, then the answer is “Yes”. Both Pastors affirm the Five Points of Calvinism/The Doctrines of Grace. We preach and teach from that perspective, and we believe the roots of Southern Baptist theology are in Reformation Theology. Most importantly, we believe that this perspective most accurately reflects the teaching of Scripture.

Believers should visit our church and listen to our teaching to determine for themselves if this is the place where they want to grow in Christ. There is no requirement that one be a Five Point Calvinist in order to worship and fellowship at GotA. Members and guests have ample opportunities to learn about these great doctrines, and many others, in our Xaris Institute courses, where they are encouraged to wrestle through challenging matters of theology, and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, come to their own conclusions. It is more important to us that people think for themselves and develop an intelligent faith that they can understand and articulate, rather than to simply mimic what their pastors believe.

So, in case you were wondering how to answer the question, “Are we a Reformed Church?”

You can answer, “No.”

“Are your pastors reformed?”

“Yes.”

We hope this clears some things up for you.

They have been helpful to me over the years and I hope so to you this year.

The beginning of a new year is an ideal time to stop, look up and get our bearings. For starters, here are 10 questions to ask prayerfully in the presence of God:

What’s one thing you could do this year to increase your enjoyment of God?

What’s the most humanly impossible thing you will ask God to do this year?

What’s the single most important thing you could do to improve the quality of your family life this year?

In which spiritual discipline do you most want to make progress this year, and what will you do about it?

What is the single biggest time-waster in your life, and what will you do about it this year?

What is the most helpful new way you could strengthen your church?

For whose salvation will you pray most fervently this year?

What’s the most important way you will, by God’s grace, try to make this year different from last year?

What one thing could you do to improve your prayer life this year?

What single thing that you plan to do this year will matter most in 10 years? In eternity?

May you see God”s all-sufficient in powerfully meaningful ways in 2012!

Here, you will occasionally find nuggets of wisdom, random musings, sermon points we ran out of time to talk about, our thoughts on the things we’re reading, and perhaps an occasional rant or two. Feel free to stop by any time and see what’s on our minds, but be warned. It could be a bit painful, especially until we get the hang of this.
